Social Studies

Unit 1: Active Citizenship and Conflict Resolution
This unit allows for foundational social studies learning at the beginning of the school year that can be applied in authentic and relevant ways through the remainder of the school year. Students identify strategies and skills that address bullying and promote equality, justice and responsibility through the introduction of power and authority.

 

Unit 2: Geography - People, Tools, and Places

HUMAN AND PHYSICAL INTERACTION

Students will understand that...
  • Individuals and communities modify, manage and depend on their environment.

  • The physical features of the environment affect individual and community activities.

Students will be able to...

  • Identify local boundaries in the community.

  • Explain why people settle in certain places.

  • Identify physical features and explain how they affect human activity.

  • Describe how communities change over time for geographic reasons.

 

SPATIAL INQUIRY

Students will understand that...

  • People use geographic terms and tools to understand people and places.

Students will be able to...

  • Use map components to get information and answer questions.

  • Identify and locate various physical features on a map.

  • Identify the hemispheres, equator and poles on a globe.

  • Identify and locate cultural/human, political and physical features using map keys and legends.

 

Unit 3: Economics: Choices and Decision Making

   This unit focuses on “traditional” economics-scarcity, cost, choice, resources, goods, services, etc. Students understand how to manage their own scarce resources and the costs and benefits of every choice.
